Unsaturated Polyester Resin, the Mainstay of Resin for FRP Fishing Boats

Unsaturated Polyester Resin (UP)

Unsaturated polyester resins (hereinafter referred to as polyester resins or resins) are made by heating different raw materials such as propylene glycol, phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride, etc. in a reaction pot at the same time to produce an esterification reaction. When this reaction is carried out, the viscosity of the solution gradually increases. A polymerization inhibitor is added when the appropriate particle size and acid value are reached. It is transferred into a dissolving pot containing styrene monomer and dissolved to become a resin solution. It is cooled and transferred to the blending tank. After adding aerogel, etc., and mixing it to a predetermined thixotropic viscosity, and adding an accelerator to give it a certain degree of curability, it is moved to a storage tank. Then it is dispensed into cylinder tanks for shipment.

2. Types

There are many types of polyester resins. Because the resin factory can arbitrarily change the resin formula, so, even if the same type of resin, different resin factory ratio is not the same, or even simply is the performance of the resin is very big difference, not to mention some unscrupulous resin factory fake well-known factory brand name to pass off as the best, so we choose the resin, do not be resin brand name and the low price of the confusion, it should be the choice of the genuine factory's products are guaranteed!

There are two types of unsaturated polyester resins depending on the resin composition:

The o-phenylene type - ORTHO type for short. The phthalic acid type is generally resistant to chemicals close to seawater at room temperature, other neutral inorganic salts in low concentrations, weak acids, and diols.

Isophthalic type - ISO type for short. It has a certain degree of corrosion resistance, high mechanical strength, strong adhesion, and at the same time has a certain degree of low-voltage electrical insulation properties. The general situation of chemical resistance is that it is resistant to inorganic salts, inorganic acids, organic acids, petroleum, alcohols, and other solvents at medium concentrations below 50°C (not resistant to strong acids, oxidizing compounds, and high temperatures).

O-phenylene type unsaturated polyester resin is the most common in the construction of fishing boats due to its lower price. The m-phenylene type unsaturated polyester resin is mostly used in the gel coat or outer layer on the outside of the hull due to its better waterproofing and greater elongation, but it is more expensive, and it is relatively costly to use all of these resins on board. Their main drawbacks are lower strength, greater shrinkage during curing, etc.
